Hello All-
So, back when Hannah had her catheter done in Edmonton, they told us that she would likely have her Fontan surgery in late February or early March...well, it's February 4th, and we still don't have a date!
Rather than freaking out and counting the days, we are trying to see the positive side of things. Craig and I had hoped that Hannah's surgery would be bumped a bit later...aka closer to Spring. We're hoping that by not getting a phone call from the hospital, our prayers have been answered that we don't have to go to Edmonton in the dead of winter.
Other than the weather issue (Edmonton is MUCH colder in the winter than Calgary), there are a few other reasons why we want the surgery delayed. For one, the hospital is 3 hours away...and the road up there (though a major highway) is awful in bad weather! We were on pins and needles the whole ride up for Hannah's cath, and we are not looking forward to a repeat performance. Also, follow-up...Hannah will likely get her follow-up car here in Calgary, but even Alberta Children's Hospital is a good 40 minutes away (depending on traffic), so again, not a great option. Craig's parents are also planning on coming up for the procedure...and though the idea of them traveling from warm West Palm Beach, Florida into frozen Edmonton during the dead of winter is kinda funny (sorry guys, but it is straight out of a comedy movie!), I'm sure they'd be much more comfortable coming up during better weather. Finally, the healing process...fresh air is the best thing for Hannah's incision to heal. Being bundled up in heavy clothes is not ideal. Neither is having all of the windows and doors closed up tight. If we were more into spring, we could dress her lighter, and possibly open up some windows for fresh air...not to mention the occasion opportunity to get outside for a walk (her in the stroller of course) for the sanity of all of us!!!
All in all, waiting is the best option. We are just hoping that that is the reason why we haven't gotten a call yet. Please say a prayer that the hospital is thinking the same thing and that's why we haven't gotten a call...and that maybe someone will drop us a line to let us know one way or another.
Oh and don't worry...once we get more info, I will be sure to post it!!
Cheers!
Sharon

I have to agree... no news is good news!!! I know that Hannah needs this next surgery but am glad that she's doing so well that surgery can wait a little while.
Please keep us updated on how Miss Hannah is doing.
